Augustana - Can't Love, Can't Hurt
A couple years since I first heard the band Augustana after doing a search for “piano rock” and stumbling upon the amazing song “Boston,” the band has returned with their follow-up full length “Can’t Love, Can’t Hurt.” The overall feel of the album is somewhat of an alt-country sound. Parts of the album even remind me sorely of Ryan Adams.
They don’t lack on the “piano rock” with the tracks “Twenty Years” (my personal fave and featured on last weeks episode of One Tree Hill) “Fire,” and “Where Love Went Wrong.” The tracks “Sweet And Low” and “Hey Now” offer heavily guitar fronted single-worthy sounds that will immediately require the use of the repeat button. Throughout the album the lyrics revolve around a central theme of waiting on something that you eventually realize won’t come, so you move on. At least this is what I interpret from the entire feel of the album. It’s the kind of album that you might take with you on one of those clear-your-head-out spontaneous road trips, in the middle of the day.
All-in-all I have to say this album was very well done by the band, and I highly anticipate voting it one of my yearly favorites come December.
