Katy Perry - One of the Boys
**
Twenty-three year old Katy Perry’s first major studio album, “One of the Boys” received a lot of buzz leading up to its release. It is hard to turn on the radio without hearing “I Kissed a Girl”, the album’s second single, which hit number one on iTunes, and so far has made it all the way to number two on Billboard’s charts. The song is undeniably catchy, but is Katy really the next big thing in pop music?
While the apparently now-standard pop spelling in “UR So Gay”, her first single that was released in late 2007, is annoying, the track itself is an amusing song about a metro-sexual boyfriend that is “so indie rock it’s almost an art”. Even Madonna has been quoted as saying that it is one of her favorite songs of the moment. Her current single “I Kissed A Girl” tells about her semi-innocent experimenting with a girl, and is reminiscent of Britney Spears and Lindsay Lohan. It will be playing over in your head for hours after hearing it whether or not you like it. Still, the content of her singles are slightly surprising considering that she is the daughter of two pastors and even released a Christian gospel album under her birth name, “Katy Hudson” back in 2001.
There are a few other songs of note, including the title track which also opens the album and “Hot N Cold” which gives listeners more fun dance pop beats. Unfortunately, the disc runs hot and cold like the boys she complains about. It is great fun when she sticks to the upbeat pop songs, but fails miserably when she tries to bare her soul about love and life in ballads such as “Thinking of You” and “Lost”. She proclaims in “Fingerprints”, the final track, “I wanna break the mold/I wanna break the stereotype” but she fits pretty nicely into the pop princess stereotype right alongside Lily Allen. If you skip over the slower tracks, the album is a fun listen but one that you will probably soon forget about.
Katy Perry can be seen performing with the Warped tour this summer.
