It has taken me far too long to write this review, in fact I honestly hope I can remember what these 48 hours of my life were like. Last month, on November 24th and 25th of 2007, I was given the privilege once again to go see my all time favorite band perform live at Orlando’s House of Blues. Even though I had seen Brand New twice before, I felt even more anxious than I ever had. The only problem was, I was trucking to the show solo. I left from New Port Richey about an hour before doors. As much as I wanted to camp out for a front and center spot, I was just to unwilling to go at it alone. I showed up after doors had open and surprisingly got a very nice spot to the right side of the stage. MewithoutYou, and Thrice were opening. I had never listened to MwY, and I’d always liked Thrice, but I wasn’t all that excited for them.
Anyway, MwY opened with an Indian/Rasta couple who played bongos and a bagpipe sort of thing. It was interesting to say the least. MwY’s performance surprised me. I truly had not expected them to be as good as they were. I felt myself getting so into their music that I was near tears (I cry a lot when I see live music).
Thrice performed second and sung the handful of singles they have, and mostly songs off their new album which I know now to be amazing. Dustin has good stage presence. I enjoyed them.
Finally, Brand New. Now that all the empty space around me had filled in and I was stuck immobile on the railing, I realized I was only able to see Jesse, Derrick and Vinnie on occassion. I had such a bad view that I thought Garrett had quit the band. Not being in the pit really had its affect on me because I found it really hard to get physically into the performance. Emotionally though, I was crying, as always. I thought the performance was good, but the past two times I had seen them, were at least ten times better. This may have been because of the somber tone of The Devil And God album, because after all this was a TDAG tour. In a nut shell this show was relaxing, and enjoyable, and I shall refrain from going into further details so that I can save them for the night that was to follow. Oh, here is the setlist for night one.
Limousine (MS Rebridge)
Welcome To Bangkok
Not The Sun
The Archers Bows Have Broken
The No Seatbelt Song
The Shower Scene
Moshi Moshi [Acoustic]
Play Crack The Sky
Luca
Sowing Season [Demo lyrics]
Millstone
Okay I Believe You, But My Tommy Gun Don't
Tauto
You Won't Know
Degausser

Now the second night was a tad bit different. One, I was meeting Tony Vu there, and two I was on a serious Brand New high. This night I got there a half hour later, and waited in half the sized line. When I walked into the venue I noticed the pit was holding barely any humans so I wandered my way right up to the front about 20 minutes before the show started.
MwY once again performed their hearts out and played a mind blowing instrumental track that had me crying the previous night and just pure excited this time around.
Thrice, had virtually the same good performance, and it was obviously better being able to view the whole band.
Finally, Tony arrived, and Brand New went on. The setlist was a bit different this night, and the difference between the pit outskirts and the pit were comparable to an Iowa cow pasture and Times Square on New Years. Even on the most depressing slow songs (i.e. ‘Limousine’ where Jesse didn’t hesitate to tell the graphic details of a decapitated child and the recovery of her severed head by her mourning mother.) The crowd was so hyped. You just cant go to a Brand New show and not be in the pit. It’s virtually a waste of time. I was crazy to say the least. I also was reassured that Garrett had not quit the band, but rather moved his place to the back of the stage where no vocals and only bass were required of him. Like last summer, they had two sets of drums. Random roadies, or friends, who knows, would sporadically pop onto stage to play the second drum set or bang the giant drum that was used during every bands set. When they played Welcome to Bangkok and Millstone, Brian and who I believe was their roadie named Ben, went absolutely freaking NUTS on the two drum sets. It made me want to jump off a cliff. At one point im pretty sure I even saw them toss their sticks back and forth to each other. (I really wish that if you’re reading this right now you will pause to go play Millstone, fast forward to 3:38 into the song, or 30 seconds left, and listen to the drums. Now picture two psychotic drum players covered in sweat slamming the drums like their life depended on it in perfect unison. That’s how good it was). They finished their amazing and 100x better set off with a first-for-the-band ENCORE of a wonderful new instrumental which they also encored with the pervious night. It sounded like a variation of Jesus, and it was beautiful. It started out with only Vinnie playing, then Jesse came back on stage, and one by one came Garrett, Derrick, and basically every member of every band and all of their roadies and friends. That’s my favorite thing about live Brand New. They have no rules. They always just bring everyone on stage to bang nuts around, and somehow, its flawless.
After the show me and Tony opted to be groupies for the night. That’s right. We waited for approximately two hours for Jesse to ignore us all. But I don’t hold it against him. Garrett, Brian, Vinnie and Derrick all came out and hung around, no problem whatsoever. Jesse just didnt. He snuck right by us all and hid away on their bus. However, Aaron from MewithoutYou did become my new favorite person this night. He came out offering boxes of the left over catered food, as well as offered to heat it up for us. He had steak, pizza, lunch meat, and pecan pie. I didn’t hesitate to take one of everything. I was the only person who did too. I thought it was pretty awesome of myself. While I was mooching his leftovers I got the chance to ask him about that crazy beautiful instrumental they played. Sadly he informed me that they have not recorded it. I told him that they should. After an accordion serenade by Aaron, and watching the bus drive off into the distance, I cussed Jesse out outloud, got over it and drove home. I’ll admit I was depressed for about three days questioning my love for Jesse Lacey. But that is now in the past. The second show was, as always, a hands down amazing performance by Brand New. I don’t know if it was because of the pit atmosphere or because they simply played better. Either way, my third and fourth Brand New shows did not let me down. I can’t wait for the next little go around they take. I’ll be there as always, and plan to be back by that tour bus for another two hour attempt at meeting my hero.
Second night's setlist:
Welcome To Bangkok
Not The Sun
The Archers Bows Have Broken
You Won't Know
Okay I Believe You, But My Tommy Gun Dont
Jaws Theme Swimming
Luca
Millstone
Sic Tansit Gloria...Glory Fades
Oh Comely

Sowing Season [Demo Lyrics]
Degausser
Limousine (MS Rebridge)
