Kicking off their U.S. tour in West Palm Beach, FL Thom, Jonny, Colin, Ed and Phil have proved that the mystery and magic that is Radiohead only ripens with time. As the members age and grow musically, their ability to embrace a crowd and reach every individual at the venue only becomes stronger. The personal touch that they brought to the crowd of 20000 made it feel like an intimate recording session rather than a packed amphitheater. The complexity, precision and beauty of the lights and mechanics only painted a picture of the flawless sound the band projected. Each band member’s versatility can be seen as they continuously switch instruments and playing styles, as Thom Yorke’s eerie and hypnotizing voice shadows over.
Radiohead’s perfectionism makes this a memorable experience. The band started their world tour off strong, and the opening band Liars, with shredding guitar riffs, captivating beats, and haunting vocals, created an energy and buzz that only enhanced the audiences excitement as they watched the stage crew hang icicle like lights and monitors all over the stage.
Mixing a great number of new songs from In Rainbows, with old favorites and band classics everyone in the audience left with the satisfaction that only comes with seeing a fantastic and unique show. Steering clear of stereotypical songs such as Creep and Karma Police, the band did not forget to play classics such as The National Anthem, Idioteque and a haunting rendition of Street Spirit during the encore. Bodysnatchers and 15 Steps off the new album sparked a particular excitement among band members that could be felt throughout the entire venue, only further demonstrating the passion that has gone into their most recent album.
Typical of his style, York rallied for human rights, flying a Tibetan flag throughout the show and advocating the band’s increasing dedication to human rights campaigns. The band has completed a tour of the southeastern United States and is now in Europe, only to return to the U.S. in late July for Lollapalooza and shows in the North and West.
